About Melmoth
Melmoth was started on a whim in the fall of 1995 after Ferric's favourite mud, SPAMMud, shut down. It was never considered that Melmoth would run as long as it has, or grow as popular as it has. While a far cry from multi-hundred players at a time mud, Melmoth has been home to several generations of players. Code from Melmoth has been released into the public domain, and has become staples in most ROM based muds; 2 prime examples would be Ferric's Signal Handler code, the first Mud Signal Handler released to the snippet community and used on many muds today. The second is the 'rip' snippet Ferric wrote because he wanted to be able to rip players in half.
Melmoth is also set apart by the fact it is one of the few muds that has ever only had 1 coder, Ferric. This has ensured a continuity of focus and story that is missing on many muds run by committe. Ferric can't take credit for this all by himself, however; Melmoth has many hard-working Immortals who run the day to day operations, and provide *invaluable* support to Ferric.
Melmoth has had several servers, and will be around for a long time to come. While Ferric no longer actively muds, he sees no reason to shut down a mud while people are still having fun, and there is still room for development.
